Schloss Moritzburg
The Baroque hunting lodge on its island in the lake
As if from a fairy tale, Schloss Moritzburg rises on an artificial island in the middle of a broad lake – a Baroque hunting and pleasure palace that Augustus the Strong had built in all its splendour. The sight is unforgettable even from the outside: four mighty round towers, the warm-yellow façade and its reflection in the water make Moritzburg one of the most beautiful palaces in Saxony.
“On an island in the middle of the lake – like something from a fairy tale”
A fairy-tale palace in the lake
Four mighty round towers, the warm-yellow façade and its reflection in the water: the very first sight of Moritzburg is unforgettable. The palace sits enthroned on an artificial island in the middle of a broad lake – a setting that enchants in every season.
The „Goldener Schuh“ (Golden Slipper)
And of course the „Goldener Schuh“ (Golden Slipper) must not be missing: Moritzburg is the filming location of the cult winter fairy tale „Drei Haselnüsse für Aschenbrödel“ (‘Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella’). Anyone visiting the palace in its snowy guise literally follows in Cinderella’s footsteps – and more than one visitor keeps an eye out for the lost slipper on the grand palace staircase.
Practical information
Frequently asked questions
Can I visit the famous Federzimmer – and when?
The Federzimmer is part of the Baroque exhibition, which is on view in the summer season (roughly from March to early November). Please note: during the winter exhibition the Baroque exhibition and the Federzimmer are not accessible.
When does the Cinderella exhibition („Golden Slipper“) take place?
The popular winter exhibition „Drei Haselnüsse für Aschenbrödel“ (‘Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella’) runs each year from late November to early March. Moritzburg is one of the original filming locations of the cult film. As it is very popular, we recommend securing tickets as early as possible (ideally online with a time slot).
Are there guided tours, and what is the Porzellanquartier?
Yes, public palace tours are offered through the Baroque floor with the ceremonial halls and the Porzellanquartier (Porcelain Quarter) at weekends and on public holidays. The historic Porzellanquartier can be visited only as part of a tour. A multimedia HistoPad guide is available.
Are dogs allowed?
Dogs on a lead are welcome in the palace park. Dogs are not permitted in the museum (with the exception of assistance dogs).
How do I get there and where do I park?
Moritzburg lies around 15 km from Dresden. Especially lovely is the journey on the historic narrow-gauge railway „Lößnitzdackel“ (Lößnitzgrundbahn) from Radebeul. By car you’ll find chargeable car parks right by the palace as well as free walkers’ car parks a little further out.
How much time should I allow, and is it suitable for families?
Allow around 2 to 3 hours for the palace and the lake landscape. Its setting on the palace island, the fairy-tale backdrop and the spacious park make Moritzburg an ideal family outing.
