Cycle tour to Moritzburg
From the Elbe Cycle Route over the vineyards of Radebeul to the baroque moated palace of Augustus the Strong.
A tour through the Saxon Elbland — from the Elbe Cycle Route up into the vineyards of Radebeul and on to the fairy-tale hunting lodge of Moritzburg amid its lakes.
Stops along the way
Six stopping points from Dresden’s old town via Radebeul to the Moritzburg palace lake.

Hotel Am Terrassenufer
You set off directly from the hotel door, rolling first towards the old town, where the day begins with a first view of the Dresden skyline.

Augustusbrücke & the Saxon paddle steamer fleet
A river crossing with a postcard view
The Augustusbrücke takes you across to the other side of the Elbe — with views of the Hofkirche, the Royal Palace and the Semperoper. Below the Brühl Terrace lie the moorings of the Sächsische Dampfschiffahrt, which with nine historic paddle steamers is the oldest and largest paddle steamer fleet in the world.

Pieschen harbour
A quiet harbour on the Elbe
Continuing along the Elbe you pass Pieschen harbour — a quiet basin in the north of Dresden, popular as a green resting place by the water, before the route turns inland towards Radebeul.

Karl May Museum, Radebeul
Winnetou, Old Shatterhand & the Wild West
In Radebeul the Karl May Museum is well worth a stop. Villa “Shatterhand”, the writer's former home, presents his life and work, while the neighbouring log house Villa Bärenfett holds a collection on the cultures of the Indigenous peoples of North America that is unique in Europe.

Schloss Wackerbarth
Europe's first “experience” winery
Following Meißner Straße you reach Schloss Wackerbarth — a baroque ensemble of manor house, terraced vineyards and a modern wine and sparkling wine producer. Where the court of Augustus the Strong once celebrated, one of Germany's best-known sparkling wine houses now invites you to pause.

Moritzburg Palace
The baroque moated palace in the lake
The centrepiece of the tour: the hunting and pleasure palace of Moritzburg, remodelled from 1723 by Pöppelmann for Augustus the Strong into a magnificent baroque residence. It sits picturesquely on an island in the palace lake and houses one of the most important collections of hunting trophies in Europe.
Tip: in winter the palace serves as the setting for the fairy-tale film “Three Wishes for Cinderella”.

Käthe Kollwitz House
A short detour by the palace lake leads to the Käthe Kollwitz House, the baroque “Rüdenhof”. The artist spent the last months of her life here and died in 1945 — today it is a small museum and the only authentically preserved home of the important graphic artist. From there you return to Dresden by the same route.
